Beginners Guide to Clinical Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that lengthens, strengthens and aligns the body.

It focuses on developing and enhancing our mind muscle connection through slow & controlled movements. By improving our muscular activation we can then elicit improvements in our motor patterns and biomechanics resulting in healthy, happy, injury-free bodies!

Pilates includes elements of resistance training, yoga and breathwork. It can be done without equipment (using body weight resistance), with weights (dumbbells, ankle weights) or with small (resistance bands, Pilates rings, balls, foam rollers, etc.) or large equipment (reformer, trapeze table, wunda chair, etc.). The possibilities are endless!

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is taught by an Allied Health Professional, usually an Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist. Not only do they have the skills and knowledge gained through their tertiary schooling, they may have also undergone extended training in Pilates. This means that Clinical Pilates classes are able to be client-focused and goal oriented, either in regards to injury rehabilitation, injury prevention or chronic disease management.

Clinical Pilates can include work on the mat, with small apparatus or on large equipment pieces.

An Exercise Physiologist brings to the table an extended skill set in exercise prescription and programming resulting in individualised and specialised classes that are able to be scaled to suit healthy and chronic populations, regardless of the equipment available to use.

What is Clinical Pilates beneficial for?

  • Improves postural awareness

  • Increases mobility & flexibility

  • Increases in core strength & stability

  • Assists with Injury Prevention

  • Enhances Mind-Muscle connections resulting in smoother & more efficient movement patterns - for both general populations & athletic populations

  • Mental health benefits

Who can do Pilates?

Pilates is accessible to all ages and skill levels! The great thing about exercising with an allied health professional is that they are able to scale classes to suit all skill levels and abilities.

  • Struggle to get onto the floor? We can adapt the exercises to a chair.

  • Don’t have a reformer? We can use small apparatus to achieve the same muscle engagement and activation.
